Green Cape Lighthouse on NSW’s Far South Coast was officially relit in February 2026, ending 30 years of inactivity since its 1992 decommissioning.
The historic structure, designed by architect James Barnet and built of cast concrete and bluestone, was restored through a joint effort by AMSA and NSW National Parks, led by former caretaker Richard Jermyn and technical expert Ian Clifford.
Their work included safely reusing original mercury, restoring the rotating pedestal, and ensuring the light met modern navigational standards.
The project, which began in the 1990s and included a test relight in 2000, overcame decades of bureaucratic resistance and technical challenges, marking a milestone in heritage preservation and maritime safety.
