Australia repatriated 34 citizens from a Syrian camp, despite no official role in the effort.
On February 16, 2026, 34 Australian citizens, including women and children from 11 families linked to the Islamic State, were released from Roj camp in northeastern Syria and transported to Damascus for repatriation.
The group, held in a camp managed by Kurdish-led forces, was handed over to relatives who traveled to Syria, then moved by buses to Damascus.
Though the Australian government has not led the effort and maintains it will not repatriate individuals with suspected ties to IS, warning they may face criminal charges upon return, the move marks the first such operation of 2026.
Roj camp holds over 2,000 people from more than 40 countries, mostly family members of detained IS affiliates, amid ongoing regional instability and international debate over the long-term management of such facilities.
