Brian Whipple will be sworn in as Schenectady’s new police chief on February 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the GE Theater, following a selection process in which he was the only applicant for the civil service test.
He returns to the role after retiring in January following a decade as chief, having joined the department in 2009 and previously served as assistant chief of the Administrative Services Bureau, overseeing budgeting, fleet management, and technology.
He also held roles including peer support coordinator, tactical trainer, and commander of the crisis negotiation team.
Whipple succeeds Clifford, who served as chief since 2016 after joining the department in 2002.
The ceremony will be led by Mayor Gary McCarthy.
