A $3B LNG plant and port facility in Durban, led by Vitol and others, aims to boost South Africa’s power supply with gas by 2039.
A consortium led by Vitol, ACWA Power, and Vivo Energy is developing a $3 billion LNG power plant and import facility at South Africa’s Durban port, aiming to generate 1,000 to 1,800 MW of gas-powered electricity.
The project, granted Strategic Integrated Projects status, will use 20 hectares at the Durban marine terminal and support South Africa’s goal to add 16 gigawatts of gas capacity by 2039.
It includes regasification, pipeline distribution via the Lilly pipeline, LNG trucking for off-grid industries, and ship bunkering.
While the estimated cost is $3 billion, no timelines, gas sourcing, or final investment details have been confirmed.
