Relatives of political prisoners in Venezuela began a hunger strike on February 14, 2026, outside Caracas’s Zone 7 police facility demanding the release of 33 detainees, following the release of 17 prisoners.
The protest, led by about 10 women including mothers of detainees, coincides with a delay in final approval of a national amnesty bill aimed at pardoning those convicted of political offenses over the past 27 years.
The bill, proposed after the January 3 U.S. raid that captured former President Nicolás Maduro, passed its first reading but stalled over procedural disputes, including whether beneficiaries must appear in court.
The U.S., which now controls Venezuela’s oil sales, has urged prisoner releases.
Human rights group Foro Penal reports 431 political prisoners have been conditionally released, with 644 still imprisoned.
