A decade after a 2017 mass shooting at Dene High School in La Loche, Saskatchewan, which killed two and injured seven, students and staff have gradually returned to classes with ongoing security, mental health support, and counseling.
The shooter, Randan Fontaine, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 10 years.
The school implemented enhanced security, hired guards, and partnered with the RCMP and government agencies for mental health services.
Though the RCMP officer’s presence has decreased due to staffing challenges, security remains.
On the 10th anniversary, the school held a ceremony focused on service and resilience instead of closing, emphasizing healing and unity.
School leaders also extended support to other communities affected by similar tragedies.
