Richard Moth has been installed as the new Archbishop of Westminster, urging the Catholic Church in England and Wales to learn from abuse survivors and prioritize safety, justice, and human dignity.
Speaking at Westminster Cathedral to a crowd of about 2,000, Moth acknowledged past failures in protecting the vulnerable and emphasized the Church’s need to listen to victims and rebuild trust.
He highlighted urgent global challenges including refugee crises, environmental stewardship, and the sanctity of life.
His homily followed a service of solemn vespers and was preceded by a message from Archbishop of Canterbury Dame Sarah Mullally, who praised Moth’s commitment to justice and ecumenical unity.
Moth succeeds Cardinal Vincent Nichols after 16 years and will lead a diocese covering London north of the Thames, Hertfordshire, and Spelthorne, marking the 175th anniversary of its founding.
The ceremony concluded with applause as Moth left the cathedral.
