Real estate taxes are rising in 29 of Luzerne County’s 76 municipalities for 2026, driven by higher costs for health insurance, workers’ compensation, and police protection.
Ashley borough saw the largest increase, jumping 62% to 7.85 mills, adding $300 to a $100,000 property’s tax bill.
Newport Township raised rates to maintain 24-hour police coverage, Hazleton cited healthcare costs, and Wilkes-Barre Township’s increase added $175.
Other areas saw smaller hikes, while 44 municipalities kept rates steady and Buck and Slocum townships have no real estate taxes.
The countywide rate rose to 6.4494 mills, adding $9.53 per $100,000 in value.
