A 22-year-old Pennsylvania college student, Tyler Boland, helped 99-year-old World War II veteran Russell Sattazahn return to Uckerath, Germany—the site where Sattazahn lost his hand in 1945.
Boland, who has interviewed veterans for five years as part of his project "Keeping History Alive," promised to assist after meeting Sattazahn.
The trip, funded by donations and a GoFundMe campaign, marked Sattazahn’s first return to Europe in over 80 years.
He recalled being drafted from high school and losing his hand in an artillery attack, expressing deep gratitude to Boland, whom he called a “great man.” Boland, inspired by his great-grandfather, a Marine, continues to document veterans’ stories and urges the public to honor their service.
