New Orleans krewes test biodegradable beads with okra seeds to reduce Mardi Gras pollution.

Biodegradable Mardi Gras beads made from plant-based PLA and containing okra seeds are being tested in New Orleans by the Krewe of Freret and two other krewes. Developed at Louisiana State University, the PlantMe Beads aim to reduce pollution from traditional plastic beads that harm storm drains and Lake Pontchartrain. The eco-friendly beads, which can be planted and naturally decompose, are part of a broader push to replace disposable throws with reusable, valuable items. Feedback from 3,000 distributed necklaces will help refine the design, as officials stress reducing waste over simply substituting materials.
