MP demands halt to cement plant approval over environmental and tribal rights concerns.
Shillong MP Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon has urged the Union Environment Ministry to halt the environmental clearance process for a proposed 0.95 MTPA cement plant in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills, citing unassessed cumulative environmental impacts, flawed public consultation, and potential violations of tribal land rights under the Sixth Schedule.
He emphasized the region’s existing industrial strain on air, water, forests, and farmland, calling for a comprehensive impact assessment and an independent review before any approval.
The MP cited concerns over transparency, informed consent, and compliance with environmental and constitutional safeguards, warning of legal action if the process proceeds without proper scrutiny.
The Ministry and project proponent have not responded.
