Iowa bill to ban biking on high-speed roads withdrawn after backlash.
A proposed Iowa bill, House Study Bill 637, would ban biking on most roads with speed limits over 25 mph, drawing criticism from cyclists and advocacy groups who say it would effectively outlaw biking across much of the state.
The legislation, which also restricts e-bikes from sidewalks and multi-use trails and would end bike-based delivery services, faced backlash for its potential to harm events like RAGBRAI and Iowa’s biking economy.
Penalties for violations include up to 30 days in jail and fines of $855.
The bill was withdrawn from the Public Safety Committee for further review, with lawmakers acknowledging the need for revisions.
