Former Balochistan Chief Minister Akhtar Mengal says Pakistan’s military approach has failed, worsening unrest due to unfulfilled promises of autonomy.
Former Balochistan Chief Minister Akhtar Mengal criticized Pakistan's decades-long use of military force and repression in Balochistan, stating it has failed to resolve deep-seated political grievances and instead deepened alienation.
Speaking at an Asma Jahangir Foundation event, he attributed the crisis to broken promises of autonomy since Pakistan’s founding, including the dismissal of elected governments and the imprisonment of tribal leaders.
Mengal said mainstream political figures face severe restrictions, legal avenues have yielded little progress, and growing frustration has led some locals to sympathize with armed groups.
Despite personal despair over exhausted institutional options, he urged immediate political solutions to prevent further violence and irreversible damage to the state’s relationship with Balochistan.
