A 62-year-old Irish equestrian coach was sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a 14-year-old girl in 2019 after grooming her over four months.
William Connolly, a 62-year-old equestrian coach from County Cork, was sentenced to nine years in prison for raping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2019.
The abuse, which occurred over four months, involved grooming through alcohol, equestrian clothing, and coercive texts, including one stating, “I want to own that (vagina) of yours.” The victim, now 21, delayed reporting for six years due to guilt and confusion, coming forward after her mother found incriminating messages.
Despite Connolly’s denials and claims the allegations were “fantasies,” a jury found him guilty on multiple counts, including rape and child exploitation.
The judge cited the severe breach of trust, age gap, and power imbalance, reducing the sentence from eleven to nine years due to Connolly’s health and good character, though noting no remorse.
The victim praised her support network and expressed determination to move forward.
