Washington lawmakers block revival of Centralia coal plant with new taxes and fees, citing climate goals and power supply risks.
Washington lawmakers are blocking a potential revival of the Centralia coal plant with a bill that revokes tax breaks and imposes new fees, including state sales tax on coal and mandatory carbon allowances.
The move follows an emergency Trump administration order allowing temporary coal use, which environmental groups and the state attorney general argue risks missing 2028–29 power needs.
The plant, shut down in December as part of a 2011 phase-out plan, remains idle with no coal burning and minimal stockpiles.
TransAlta has not opposed the bill or provided updates.
A state law banning coal power purchases since January further complicates any restart.
The bill passed 63–33 and now heads to the Senate.
