A UK family fights a council order to remove a safety fence around their home, built to protect their autistic child, despite local support and prior safety concerns.
A couple in Hallow, Worcestershire, are challenging a council order to remove a 5.8-foot fence installed around their home to protect their six-year-old autistic son, who has twice wandered into a busy road.
The fence, built to replace a hazardous 16-foot hedge that encroached on a narrow pavement, exceeds the permitted height by 78cm and was rejected by Malvern Hills District Council, which cited concerns over the village’s character and visual impact.
Despite support from neighbors, schools, and local officials, the council denied two appeals, citing inconsistent enforcement, as similar fences exist nearby.
The family, who spent £3,000 on the project and moved in late 2024, say they were improving safety and are frustrated by the enforcement process.
They are seeking to keep the fence in place and are awaiting a final decision.
