A Tuscaloosa jury convicted Luther Watkins Jr. of killing off-duty officer Dornell Cousette in 2019, with sentencing scheduled for Feb. 17, 2026.
A Tuscaloosa, Alabama, jury has convicted Luther Watkins Jr. of capital murder in the 2019 killing of off-duty police officer Dornell Cousette during a confrontation at a residence.
The verdict, reached after a five-day trial and over three hours of deliberation, followed closing arguments on February 13, 2026.
Prosecutors said Watkins, aware of outstanding warrants and Cousette’s identity, deliberately fled and shot the officer.
The defense argued Watkins acted in self-defense after a struggle inside the home, with no evidence showing he had a weapon before being shot.
Sentencing is set for February 17, 2026.
