Three skiers, including two Britons and one French citizen, died in a French Alps avalanche despite safety gear and a prior red alert.
Three skiers, including two British nationals and one French citizen, died Friday in an avalanche at Val d'Isère in the French Alps, with one British skier injured.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the Manchet valley, where a snowslide swept six skiers off-piste, triggering a rare red avalanche alert the previous day due to heavy snowfall from Storm Nils.
Despite proper safety gear, including transceivers, the high-risk conditions persisted even after the alert was lifted, with the danger level remaining at four out of five.
This tragedy is part of a deadly winter season in the Alps, with at least 25 avalanche-related deaths reported in France so far.
Authorities continue urging skiers to stay in marked areas and avoid off-piste terrain.
