Texas awarded $14M in grants to rural fire departments, including Panhandle agencies, to buy gear and training tools.
The Texas A&M Forest Service has awarded $14 million in grants to volunteer fire departments across Texas, including multiple Panhandle agencies, as part of a record $192 million appropriation from the 89th Texas Legislature.
The funds, distributed in the third round of the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, support purchases of personal protective equipment and training aids for departments that had been on waiting lists.
Additional base funding of $88 million for 2026–2027 includes higher reimbursements and reduced cost-sharing to address rising equipment costs.
