A Queens man with schizophrenia was shot by police during a mental health crisis and now faces assault charges, sparking debate over police response to such incidents.
Jabez Chakraborty, 22, of Queens, was indicted on first-degree attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon charges after allegedly lunging at NYPD officers with a knife during a January 26 mental health crisis at his home.
Officers shot him four times after he ignored commands to drop the knife, and he remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
The Queens District Attorney’s Office, led by Melinda Katz, said evidence including body camera footage and 911 recordings supports the officers’ actions.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for the charges to be dropped, advocating for mental health professionals to handle such crises.
Chakraborty, who has schizophrenia, pleaded not guilty in a virtual arraignment, and a judge set bail at $50,000, rejecting a request for remand.
