flag A Niagara police officer was cleared in the 2024 jump of a man who fractured his pelvis after using drugs and fleeing indoors.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Niagara Regional Police officer of criminal wrongdoing in the October 2024 incident where a 42-year-old St. Catharines man suffered a pelvic fracture after jumping from a second-floor window. The man, who had used methamphetamine and prescription medication, was found locked in his bedroom and reportedly wanted to meet officers in the backyard. When he did not appear, officers returned inside and heard a commotion before he jumped. The SIU found no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence, stating her actions were consistent with procedure and the man’s decision to jump was not influenced by her conduct.
