A mentally ill man was sentenced to life in prison with a hospital order for a premeditated knife attack on a British Army officer in 2024.
Anthony Esan, 25, was sentenced to life in prison with a hospital order after pleading guilty to a targeted July 2024 knife attack on Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, a British Army officer, near Brompton Barracks in Kent.
Esan, who had schizophrenia and a history of mental health issues, purchased knives days before the attack and researched violent incidents, including the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.
The court heard the assault was deliberate and premeditated, driven by a grudge against the Army, despite his mental illness.
Esan, who attacked Teeton while he wore his uniform, will remain at high-security Broadmoor Hospital indefinitely, with future release subject to Parole Board approval.
Teeton, critically injured but survived, praised emergency responders and his wife Eileen, who intervened during the attack.
The judge emphasized Esan poses a significant risk to the public.
