A Massachusetts man was indicted for impersonating Oklahoma’s former education chief and sending fake letters to schools.
A Massachusetts man, Owen Thomas Cunningham, 48, has been indicted for falsely impersonating former Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters.
In August 2024, Cunningham sent forged letters to school superintendents across Oklahoma, claiming to act on Walters’ behalf and requesting distribution of certain documents to students.
Walters confirmed he did not authorize the letters, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation launched an inquiry.
Attorney General Gentner Drummond condemned the act as a deliberate attempt to deceive educators and undermine public trust.
Cunningham faces a misdemeanor charge of false impersonation of a public officer, punishable by up to six months in jail, a $2,000 fine, or both.
