Lidl fired a UK worker for drinking free water he didn’t pay for, and a tribunal upheld the firing as fair.
Julian Oxborough, a Lidl employee with over ten years of service in Somerset, was dismissed in 2024 for drinking a 17p water bottle he did not pay for, claiming he was dehydrated and believed it was discarded.
The incident occurred after a customer exchanged a barcode-less bottle at checkout.
Oxborough consumed the water and refilled his bottle, later admitting he did not report or pay for it.
After a manager found the empty bottle and reviewed CCTV, he was suspended and investigated.
Lidl cited gross misconduct under its zero-tolerance policy on unpaid stock.
An employment tribunal in October 2025 upheld the dismissal, ruling it fair and consistent with company policy, despite Oxborough’s claims of stress and misunderstanding.
