India approves ₹18,662 crore project for Assam’s greenfield corridor, including a first-of-its-kind underwater tunnel under the Brahmaputra River, to slash travel time and boost connectivity.
The Indian government has approved a ₹18,662 crore project to build a 15.79-km, four-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor from Gohpur to Numaligarh in Assam, including India’s first underwater road-and-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra River.
The tunnel, designed as a twin tube with one lane for rail and one for road, will cut travel time from six hours to minutes, bypassing congested routes through Kaziranga National Park.
It will connect NH-15 and NH-715, integrate with two railway lines, and link 11 economic nodes, 8 logistics hubs, major railway stations, airports, and waterways, boosting regional connectivity and economic growth.
The project is expected to generate around 80 lakh person-days of employment.
In a separate move, the cabinet approved widening NH-167 in Telangana to a four-lane highway to ease traffic and improve regional development.
India aprueba un proyecto de 18.662 millones de rupias para el corredor de campo verde de Assam, que incluye un túnel submarino bajo el río Brahmaputra, el primero de su tipo, para reducir el tiempo de viaje y aumentar la conectividad.
