Helion Energy, backed by Sam Altman, hit 150 million degrees in plasma, achieving first private fusion with deuterium-tritium and targeting 2028 grid power.
Helion Energy, Sam Altman’s fusion startup, has achieved a major breakthrough by heating plasma to 150 million degrees Celsius on its Polaris prototype, becoming the first private company to produce measurable deuterium-tritium fusion and exceed the 100 million degree threshold needed for commercial fusion.
The milestone, reached in January 2026 near Seattle, validates Helion’s rapid prototyping and Field-Reversed Configuration technology.
The company aims to deliver grid power by 2028 with its Orion plant in Washington, using deuterium-helium-3 fuel in future operations.
