Canada's Supreme Court voids 2025 Terrebonne election due to clerical error, ordering a new vote.
The Supreme Court of Canada has voided the 2025 federal election result in Terrebonne, overturning a one-vote Liberal victory after a clerical error caused a valid special ballot to be returned to a voter instead of being counted.
The court ruled the mistake, stemming from an Elections Canada employee who used their own postal code on ballots, undermined electoral integrity, requiring a new election.
The decision leaves the Liberal Party with 168 seats, short of a majority.
The Bloc Québécois welcomed the ruling, demanding a swift by-election, while the Liberals said they respect the decision.
The error affected at least 40 ballots, though no fraud was involved.
