Baltimore starts deer culling to reduce overpopulation and protect parks.
Baltimore City Recreation & Parks has launched its first deer management program to address overpopulation in the city’s 2,300 acres of natural areas, where deer numbers exceed sustainable levels by up to 21 times.
The initiative, developed with input from over 3,700 residents and guided by national best practices, uses controlled culling by USDA-trained biologists to restore forest health, reduce wildlife habitat loss, and lower risks of tick-borne diseases and vehicle collisions.
Parks will temporarily close during operations.
The effort aims to support long-term ecological recovery.
