A 60-year-old retired firefighter and veteran died after being hit by a police cruiser on a Massachusetts campus.
Daniel Kennedy, a 60-year-old retired Gloucester firefighter and Desert Storm veteran, died on February 11, 2026, nearly a week after being struck by a marked Lowell police cruiser on the UMass Lowell campus.
The incident occurred around 6:23 p.m. on February 5 near the McGauvran Center while Kennedy, a recent student at UMass Lowell, was walking on Wilder Street.
The officer involved sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized.
A joint investigation is underway involving the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, and crime scene services.
Kennedy, remembered as a dedicated public servant and advocate for veterans’ mental health, had recently re-enrolled in college to continue his service.
His family has called for a thorough review of the incident.
