Virginia passes bipartisan law restricting federal immigration arrests in public buildings without warrants.
The Virginia House of Delegates passed bipartisan legislation Thursday restricting federal immigration agents from making arrests in courthouses, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities without a judicial warrant.
The bills also prohibit agents from entering public buildings for enforcement without a court order or local law enforcement consent, and require state and local agencies to have a warrant before cooperating with federal immigration actions.
The measures aim to protect civil rights and public safety amid concerns over aggressive enforcement and fatal incidents during protests in Minneapolis.
The bills now move to the Senate for consideration.
