Corporal Ralyn Hill of the U.S. Army’s 129th Infantry Regiment earned the Medal of Honor in 1919 for rescuing 2nd Lt. Wellford MacFadden Jr., a U.S. Army Air Service pilot, under heavy fire during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive on October 7, 1918.
MacFadden, flying a French-built Spad XIII with the 103rd Aero Squadron, was shot down and killed near Brieulles, France.
Though initial reports misidentified the pilot as French, new evidence confirms his U.S. identity using U.S. Air Service records and the rediscovery of his grave.
Hill’s daring rescue across a footbridge under enemy fire was validated decades later, resolving a long-standing mystery.
He survived the war, worked in law enforcement, and died in 1977.
