UN climate chief Simon Stiell warned that rising global instability, trade tensions, and weakened international cooperation are undermining climate progress, citing the U.S. under President Trump as a key destabilizing force due to its withdrawal from climate commitments and fossil fuel expansion.
Speaking ahead of COP31 in Antalya, Turkey, Stiell noted clean energy investment now exceeds fossil fuels and renewables have surpassed coal in power generation, urging stronger global unity to meet the 2023 COP28 goal of tripling clean energy by 2030 and transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Turkey’s environment minister echoed the call, rejecting any rollback in climate efforts.
