Uber’s expanded licensing in Cumbria threatens local taxi drivers, prompting calls for fairer oversight.
UK MP Tim Farron has raised concerns that Uber drivers licensed outside south Cumbria, including from Wolverhampton, are undercutting local taxi drivers in Kendal, Windermere, and Barrow, threatening their livelihoods.
The issue stems from a three-year Private Hire Operator licence granted to Uber by Westmorland and Furness Council in 2025, allowing the company to operate with a planned Ulverston headquarters.
Thirty local taxi drivers have urged greater licensing transparency and enforcement, calling for stronger oversight to ensure fair competition.
Farron is now pushing the Transport Secretary for scrutiny of licensing processes and accountability measures.
The council has not responded to requests for comment.
