Despite losing strokes off the tee and on approach shots, his exceptional short game fueled 10 birdies and no bogeys, including three consecutive birdies to close.
He holds a one-shot lead over Sam Burns and Keegan Bradley, both of whom shot 63s at different courses.
The tournament features rounds at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill with no 36-hole cut and a $20 million prize pool.
Hisatsune earned his spot via the Aon Swing 5 rankings and FedEx Cup points, having previously tied for second at the Farmers Insurance Open and tied for 10th at the WM Phoenix Open.
