Nebraska Senator Cavanaugh reprimanded for removing a sanctioned historical exhibit she deemed ideologically narrow.
Nebraska State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh was formally reprimanded by the Legislature’s Executive Board for removing parts of a PragerU-produced historical exhibit from the State Capitol in January 2026, despite claims she was unaware it was officially sanctioned.
The display, part of the nation’s 250th anniversary commemorations, featured over 80 paintings on American Revolution and Declaration of Independence themes.
Surveillance footage captured her removal of the exhibits, prompting criticism from Governor Jim Pillen and a criminal investigation by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, which concluded no charges would be filed but kept the probe open.
Cavanaugh said she believed senators couldn’t place items on Capitol walls and called the exhibit ideologically narrow, while the Board upheld its reprimand, stating her actions were unprofessional and inconsistent with expected conduct.
The incident has drawn broader scrutiny from historians who question the exhibit’s accuracy.
