A massive great white shark, Contender, is being tracked near North Carolina as part of a study on shark migration and behavior.
A 1,700-pound male great white shark named Contender, tagged by OCEARCH in January 2025, has been detected near Cape Fear, North Carolina, part of a group of tagged sharks now active along the East Coast.
Measuring over 13 feet, Contender is one of the largest male great whites ever recorded in the Western North Atlantic.
Researchers are tracking his movements alongside other tagged sharks, including females and juveniles, to study migration and potential mating activity in the southeastern U.S. during late winter and early summer.
While great whites are often feared, they rarely attack humans, and sightings like this help scientists better understand their behavior and role in marine ecosystems.
