India approved buying 288 S-400 missiles from Russia for $1.2 billion to boost air defense.
India has approved the purchase of 288 S-400 surface-to-air missiles from Russia, including 120 short-range and 168 long-range variants, for about Rs 10,000 crore, according to multiple reports.
The Defense Acquisition Council, chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity, with delivery fast-tracked.
The system, which played a key role in Operation Sindoor in May 2025, intercepted drones, aircraft, and missiles up to 400 km away.
The acquisition supports India’s efforts to strengthen air defense, complementing existing S-400 units and other defense procurements like Rafale jets and P-8I aircraft.
