Horse trainer Ival Brownlee banned 16.5 months after his horse tested positive for methamphetamine, linked to his own long-term drug use.
Waikato horse trainer Ival Brownlee has been banned for 16.5 months after his winning horse, Emily Bay, tested positive for methamphetamine in October 2025.
A hair follicle test revealed Brownlee had long-term use of methamphetamine, amphetamine, and THC acid, leading the Racing Integrity Board to conclude contamination likely occurred through his own use.
Despite denying intentional administration, Brownlee admitted the charge.
The ban follows prior drug-related incidents in 2012 and 2015, and the RIB emphasized serious animal welfare risks and threats to public trust, especially given methamphetamine’s classification as a Class A substance.
The case is part of a growing pattern of methamphetamine contamination in New Zealand harness racing.
El entrenador de caballos Ival Brownlee fue suspendido 16,5 meses después de que su caballo diera positivo por metanfetamina, relacionada con su propio consumo de drogas a largo plazo.
