Henry McGowan found not guilty by reason of insanity for killing his father in Ireland, deemed delusional due to mental illness.
Henry McGowan, 31, of Brooklyn, was found not guilty by reason of insanity on February 12, 2026, for the 2024 strangulation of his father, John McGowan, 66, at the Ballyfin Demesne hotel in Ireland.
The jury accepted expert testimony that McGowan suffered from schizoaffective disorder and was delusional at the time, believing his father was an imposter and that he was divinely commanded to kill him.
The father, a Wall Street trader, had flown from Connecticut to help his son, who had a history of mental health crises, including hospitalizations in New York and Paris.
After an 83-minute deliberation, Judge Paul McDermott ordered McGowan committed to the Central Mental Hospital for treatment, expressing sympathy for the family.
