A harsh winter dzud killed over 26,300 livestock in Mongolia in January 2026, affecting 11 provinces and threatening nomadic herders' livelihoods.
A severe winter phenomenon known as dzud has killed over 26,300 livestock in January across at least 11 of Mongolia’s 21 provinces, including Uvs, Bayan-Ulgii, Zavkhan, and Uvurkhangai, according to the National Statistics Office.
The event, caused by frozen ground and heavy snow that block animal access to food, continues to impact nomadic herders who rely on livestock for their livelihoods.
Despite annual losses, Mongolia reported 58.1 million head of livestock by the end of 2025.
