Goa's Dabolim Airport will stay open for civilian flights alongside Mopa, despite defense concerns, after central approval.
Goa’s Dabolim International Airport will remain open for civilian flights alongside the newer Mopa airport, according to Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, who cited assurances from Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Union Cabinet.
Godinho dismissed claims that GMR, operator of Mopa Airport, is lobbying to close Dabolim, calling them baseless.
The state government reaffirmed the decision after concerns arose over potential closure due to defense priorities, sparking political debate and public anxiety.
While opposition leaders and local officials have criticized the government for favoring GMR and warned of economic harm to South Goa, Godinho said a memorandum on the airports’ importance for tourism and regional development was submitted and accepted.
The final decision rests with the central government due to Dabolim’s defense status.
El aeropuerto Dabolim de Goa permanecerá abierto para vuelos civiles junto a Mopa, a pesar de las preocupaciones de defensa, después de la aprobación central.
