The Diocese of Brooklyn seeks a global settlement for 1,100 abuse lawsuits, using asset sales, not parish funds, to compensate survivors.
The Diocese of Brooklyn announced on February 12, 2026, plans to pursue a global settlement for about 1,100 child sexual abuse lawsuits, primarily under New York’s Child Victims Act, with most allegations dating to the 1960s and 1970s.
Bishop Robert Brennan said the diocese will use funds from asset sales and cost savings, not parish donations, to compensate survivors, building on over $100 million paid to more than 500 victims since 2017 through its Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program.
Neutral mediators have been appointed to help facilitate the process, aiming to avoid individual trials and reduce trauma.
The move follows a similar settlement by the Archdiocese of New York.
