Bruce Preston, a respected macroeconomist and professor at NSW University, has been appointed to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s interest rate-setting committee, effective March 1, replacing Alison Watkins.
The appointment, following an independent process and Coalition consultation, marks a shift in board composition with Preston becoming the eighth trained economist on the nine-member committee.
Known for advocating clearer central bank communication, his 2020 paper influenced recent RBA reforms, including governor press conferences.
The RBA recently raised the cash rate to 3.85%, with no expected hikes until June.
Preston’s appointment is one of two major board changes this year, as economist Ian Harper’s term ends in August.
