A 13-year-old Alberta boy got 3 years in rehab for trying to kill his 7-year-old brother in 2025.
A 13-year-old boy from Lethbridge, Alberta, was sentenced to three years in a secure rehabilitation program after pleading guilty to attempting to kill his seven-year-old brother in August 2025.
The attack, which left the younger boy with life-threatening injuries, occurred when the older boy stabbed him multiple times while their father was away.
The court applied the Intensive Rehabilitation and Custody Supervision program, the maximum penalty for a youth convicted of attempted murder, due to the severity of the crime and the offender’s untreated mental health conditions.
He will serve two years in secure custody with access to mental health treatment, followed by one year under supervision.
The Crown and defense both supported the sentence, noting the youth’s remorse and lack of prior record.
A review may consider moving him to open custody after one year.
