The Washoe Tribe has acquired 10,274 acres northeast of Lake Tahoe, formerly Loyalton Ranch, renaming it the WélmeltiɁ Preserve, the largest tribal land return in the Sierra Nevada and third largest in California.
Funded by a $5.5 million state grant and private donations totaling $6.9 million, the purchase was completed through the Waší·šiw Land Trust.
The land, within the tribe’s historic homelands, borders public areas and supports diverse wildlife and ecosystems.
The tribe aims to restore habitats, revive cultural practices, and educate youth, marking a significant step in healing from historical displacement and advancing tribal sovereignty and conservation.
