Soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan won Canada’s top arts honor for her global impact and support of emerging artists.
Barbara Hannigan, the acclaimed soprano and conductor, received the National Arts Centre Award at the 2026 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards for her exceptional contributions to the performing arts, including her global performances, recent album "Electric Fields" with the Labeque sisters, and leadership in supporting young artists through programs like Equilibrium and Momentum.
She will soon become chief conductor and artistic director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
Other honorees included James Cameron, Daniel Lavoie, Susan Benson, Sylvain Émard, and Tonya Williams, who received lifetime achievement awards.
