A restored Fuzhou hillside, linked to U.S. physicist Milton Gardner’s memories, now honors China-Western ties through preserved heritage and a memorial path.
A restored mountain area in Kuliang near Fuzhou, once home to a Western expatriate community, has become a symbol of international friendship after a 1992 article about American physicist Milton Gardner’s childhood memories reached then-Fuzhou Party chief Xi Jinping.
He arranged for Gardner’s widow to visit in 2000, sparking renewed interest that led to the restoration of historic villas and the return of dozens of descendants seeking to reconnect with their heritage.
Today, a one-kilometer path through the site preserves the area’s cross-cultural history as a living memorial to past ties between China and the West.
