Portugal's interior minister resigned after deadly winter storms, linked to climate change, caused widespread damage and at least seven deaths.
Portugal’s Interior Minister Maria Lúcia Amaral has resigned amid growing criticism over the government’s response to severe winter storms that caused at least seven deaths, widespread flooding, landslides, and an estimated €4 billion in damage.
The storms, including Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta, triggered power outages and mass evacuations, with scientists linking the extreme weather to climate change.
Amaral cited personal and political reasons for stepping down, and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro will temporarily assume her role.
The resignation marks the first since Montenegro’s center-right government took office in May 2025.
