Oregon lawmakers seek to buy Abiqua Falls to keep it publicly accessible.
Oregon lawmakers Sen. Fred Girod and Rep. Ben Bowman are leading a bipartisan push to buy Abiqua Falls and 40 acres of surrounding land from the Abbey Foundation of Oregon to prevent private ownership from restricting public access.
The property, listed for auction in early February, has been open to the public for over a century.
The state aims to fund the purchase through a legislative bond, with potential management by Oregon State Parks, the Department of State Lands, or the Oregon Department of Forestry.
While a state park designation is preferred, any solution ensuring public access is acceptable.
The effort has broad support, with conservation groups and lawmakers citing the site’s ecological, recreational, and historical value.
