New South Wales man Robert Wayne Kwan, 77, charged in historic sexual assaults using forensic genetic genealogy.
Robert Wayne Kwan, 77, has been charged in New South Wales with multiple historic sexual assaults dating back to 1991, becoming the first case in the state to use forensic genetic genealogy—similar to the method that caught California’s “Golden State Killer.” Police linked Kwan’s DNA to three cold cases, including attacks on a child and two adults, after re-examining evidence since 2022 using advanced DNA analysis and public genealogy databases.
The technique identified a close relative, guiding investigators to Kwan, who faces five counts of sexual intercourse without consent, assaults on minors, attempted choking, and indecent acts.
He was denied bail and is due in court on April 22.
The method is used under strict privacy rules, with consented DNA data only.
